Dear Friends:
The Barn Show was wonderful! It was great seeing all my
Virginia friends and several out-of-state ones, too. I was delighted
to meet Gene and Beth Spitler, their daughter Nancy Cox, and their granddaughter
Hannah Cox. The Spitler’s own Baylor’s Mill, the subject
of the special Barn Show print, and it was obvious from the pride in
their voices how very special their home is to them.
The Barn Show print, Baylor's Mill, is proudly shown by
the owners of the mill, Gene and Beth Spitler, their daughter Nancy
Cox and granddaughter Hannah Cox.
It seems I left Florida just in time to miss the arrival
of Hurricane Dennis. What a monster! People are so lucky that it lost
a good deal of its energy before making landfall. Even so, there is
still an awful lot of cleaning up and repairing to be done, and my heart
goes out to those affected by it. Coming just ten months after Hurricane
Ivan hit the same area makes it especially tough. The important thing
to remember if you live in a hurricane prone area is that life is more
important than property. If your local officials are advising evacuation,
then please head to safer ground!
A business meeting at breakfast: Bob Almond (Director of the P.
Buckley Moss Foundation for Children's Education), Pat, Dell Philpott
(Program Coordinator of the Foundation), Corrado Gabellieri (Museum
Director), and longtime friend of Pat, Anita Stocz, discuss plans to
move the Foundation offices to the site of the Museum and concepts for
a Foundation fundraising print edition.
I was also saddened to hear about the terrorist bombings
in London. I know that I’m not alone when I say that it reminded
me of September 11, 2001. Of course, we at The Moss Portfolio were worried
about our family and friends and were relieved to find out that they
were safe. I admire the courage and strength of our friends across the
Atlantic as they get back on the trains and buses and go about their
daily lives. That is the best thing to do—continue living life
as we normally would.
I am very excited to be returning to Fairfax, Virginia,
this coming weekend. I’ll be showing at the Moser
Gallery July 16 & 17, and I’m looking forward to seeing
all my old friends. Three special prints of three historic churches
in Fairfax County will make their debut at the show, and I think they’ll
be a real hit.
